and whose complaint to the fbi led to the investigation which uncovered the affair. and there's a growing chorus of questions from lawmakers about exactly when the affair came to light, who in washington was told about it, and when they were told. nbc's kristen walker has the latest on the controversy. >> reporter: according to a senior federal official and close friend of david petraeus, 37-year-old jill kelly complained to fbi agents about being harassed by paula broadwell, david petraeus's biographer. a senior u.s. military official says jill kelly is involved in wounded warrior fundraising in tampa, is married, she and her husband are close petraeus family friends. officials say the downfall started when kelly complained to the fbi that she was receiving intimidating e-mails from broadwell. law enforcement officers tell nbc news that those e-mails tloed the discovery of others between general petraeus and broadwell and were indicative of an extramarital affair. >> my first reaction was disbelief. >> reporter: steven boylen is petraeus's former spokesperson and served with him in iraq.

anonymous e-mails accusing her of flaun flaunting her friendly relationship with top military brass. fbi traced those e-mails back to paula broadwell computer where they discovered the evidence of broadwell affair with david petraeus. but it doesn't stop there abc news has learned that general allen also received an anonymous e-mail traced to paula broadwell painting jill kelly as sew duck trees. further lack by the fbi that kelly e-mail revealed hundreds between kelly and general allen. 20 to 30,000 pages of communication in all. but source familiar with the e-mails say they contain no evidence of a sexual relationship. supporting what allen says. instead they are describe as friendly. perhaps flirtatious but routine. mostly about meeting with ambassador and dinner party n.one pet kelly tells the general she saw him on tv. he responds thanks dear. you are a sweet heart. many e-mails were from kelly to general allen's wife. the 2 kims were good friend. >> somebody proves otherwise i believe that he did nothing inappropriate. >>reporter: and today the white house made clear the
at oakland international airport. the fbi is now investigating a passenger who was carrying potentially dangerous materials. cbs 5 reporter mark sayre on the man's wristwatch which immediately raised suspicions. >> reporter: the fbi now taking the lead in this investigation. and alameda county sheriff's deputies which actually made the arrest say there is no question what was found here was dangerous. the incident occurred here at the terminal 2 security checkpoint at the oakland international airport. authorities say 49-year-old jeffrey mcgann a 49-year-old resident of rancho palos verdes was trying to botched a flight home to l.a.x. when he attempted to pass through the security checkpoint with a very suspicious watch. >> the watch had on it a toggle switch, a series of fuses, a series of wires protruding from it, a circuit board, and the watch itself which was on incorrect time. >> reporter: it wasn't just the watch that drew authorities' attention, it was his overall behavior and an unusual alteration to his boots. >> be they also had what appeared to be a homemade cavity in there a

the experience at one point of having your phone tapped by the fbi. >> it was a home phone. >> once the director of the aclu, director of the washington, d.c., we talked about the petraeus scandal, what had gone on there and the fbi investigating that whole thing. when you say that unfold, there were a lot of questions about whether the fbi had gone too far, in terms of what it did. what was your take on that from the civil liberties point of view. >> well, i think it underscored what i think this is a very serious problem i think we have to deal with. our e-mails are not protected. we all think our own information is protected from the government and at least they need a warrant. but the fact is, the supreme court said a long time ago that if your records are in somebody else's possession, at that time, they were talking about bank records. but if your e-mails are at google or yahoo or wherever, in the cloud somewhere, and they don't have to get a warrant. they just go to the company and say give us the records and most of the times the companies do give the records. we don't know exactly how t
-mails with another four-star general. the fbi is reviewing thousands of documents between jill kelley and general john allen. under military law adultery is a crime but allen's spokesperson insists there was no affair. kelley is the woman who complained to the fbi after receiving harassing anonymous e-mails. agents found those e-mails were sent by paula broadwell, who was having an affair with general david petraeus and apparently was jealous of petraeus' friendship with kelley. the discovery of the affair prompted petraeus to resign as cia chief last friday. as for general allen, he continues to have the support of the president. >> i can tell you that the president thinks very highly of general allen and his service to his country as well as the job he has done in afghanistan. >> general allen was supposed to be appointed to nato commander this thursday but that confirmation hearing has been delayed. meanwhile petraeus is not out of the picture yet, even though he has resigned. senator dianne feinstein says she plans to ask him to testify when the senate intelligence committee holds a hearing t
